Can Hepatitis C be cured?
Years ago, Hep C treatments took a long time and required injections. Newer treatments for Hep C, called direct-acting antiviral regimens, are the standard care for Hep C and help stop the virus from spreading to other cells. These treatments all oral and can be completed in as few as 8-12 weeks, with very few side effects. Additionally, many of today’s treatments have high cure rates of 95% or higher. A patient is considered cured if the virus is not detectable in the blood months after treatment has ended.

Who Should Get Tested for Hepatitis C?
It is recommended that all adults age 18-79 be tested for Hepatitis C. You should also be tested if you have any of these high-risk factors:

  • Born Between 1945 and 1965
  • Received a blood transfusion before1992 or blood products before 1987
  • Are on kidney dialysis
  • Ever used IV drugs (even if it was just once or many years ago)
  • Live or care for someone with Hep C
  • Have HIV
  • Were born to a mother with Hep C
  • Have abnormal liver tests or liver disease

Since the virus often doesn't produce symptoms until after more significant liver damage occurs, it's important to talk to your doctor about being screened, especially if you think you have been exposed or are in one of the above high-risk categories.

What are the symptoms of Hepatitis C?
Most people with Hep C don’t have noticeable symptoms at first-or ever. Most people can carry the virus for years and not know they have it. The most common symptoms are tiredness, depression, joint pain and vague abdominal discomfort. Even if you do not have any symptoms, Hep C can be a serious illness that can lead to other health problems, such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.
