School Based Programs

Learning and health go hand in hand. An unhealthy child cannot learn. A coordinated approach to school health can improve the health and educational achievement of students. The following eight components are part of the School-Based Health Centers program:

  1. Health Education/Health Instruction
  2. Health Services
  3. Basic School Health Services Healthful School Environment
  4. School Food Services
  5. School-Based Worksite Health Promotion
  6. Counseling and Psychological Services
  7. Physical Education
  8. Parent/Community Involvement

 

Services Include

  • Treatment of minor illnesses and injuries
  • Athletic and routine physical examinations
  • Immunizations
  • Health EducationTreatment of skin problems
  • Education and referral for treatment of venereal diseases
  • Hearing, vision, and scoliosis screening
  • Kid Med services
  • Dental hygiene education
  • Health education for individuals and groups
  • Referral for diagnostic lab testing
  • Referrals to alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs
  • Mental health services including, but not limited to, crisis counseling, individual family and/or group therapy
  • Referral to other agencies for services not provided by the Health Center and participation in health risk surveys and questionnaires
  • STD clinic

Registration
Students need to be registered with the school-based health center. To be registered, a student must have a consent form signed by a parent or guardian. Registration provides important information to be used in case of an emergency and is required for medications, treatment, and most laboratory tests.

Service Provisions
Basic school health services are available to all students. These services include health screenings, counseling, education, communicable disease prevention, and basic first aid.

Services which require a request from parents include immunizations, follow-up of exiting health conditions, and physical exams.

Health professionals communicate with parents regarding student health needs by written notes, telephone calls or personal visits.
